OSMET 8: Managing threats against public figures

Overview: For several reasons people in the public eye, whether famous film actors, sportsmen, business executives or political officials, are more at risk of receiving negative or other forms of unwanted attention. Physical violence committed against public figures rarely occurs, problematic approaches happen slightly more often, but behaviours such as threatening letters or social media postings, as well as repeated unwanted intrusions and communications are more of a concern.

What are the risk indicators for physical approach, or for becoming a victim of stalking? This is only one of the questions the workshop will answer. The focus will lie on specific threats and unwanted behaviours that business executives and high net worth individuals can be confronted with. Questions like what the motivations of those engaging in unwanted communications and approaches are, what the role of mental illness is and how this relates to violence, and what the risks and challenges can be when it comes to close body protection, will all be addressed and also illustrated with casework. The last part of the Webinar will be focusing on what executives, their security and behavioural threat management teams can do to lower risk and increase the quality of their protection activity.
