OSMET 7: The use of protection orders when managing threatening behaviour: The good, the bad and the ugly

Overview: Protection orders are legal instruments intended to allow a person experiencing threatening behaviour to obtain a court order instructing another person to stop their behaviour, under threat of arrest. There are two types, one that is used in the context of domestic violence, and the other for non-domestic violence related cases. They are intended to be an easily accessible, free mechanism for the public to use. However there are certain challenges relating to protection orders including difficulties in obtaining them, and the fact that they don’t deter certain types of threateners, and can actually increase the risk for the person taking out the protection order. In this talk we will discuss the different types of protection orders, how to take out a protection order, and the pros and cons relating to them.
