When Bad Things Happen: Working with the Media in Times of Organizational Crisis.

When a violent event occurs at a workplace or on campus, the glare of the media spotlight is almost certain to follow, even as efforts are made to insure safety and resume operations. Our media partners are critical to getting timely and appropriate information to the public, yet demands for information can pose a risk to employee privacy and organizational reputation. How can a balance be struck between the public’s right to know and the rights of the organization and its members to privacy and a chance to recover? This program looks at these issues through the eyes and extensive experience of some of New England’s best-known professionals in the fields of organizational security, public affairs, and the news media.

Bonnie Michelman, Director of Police, Security, and Outside Services, Massachusetts General Hospital
Cheryl Fiandaca, Chief Investigative Reporter, I-Team, CBS Television, Boston
Peggy Slasman, Senior Vice President, Public Affairs, Massachusetts General Hospital
Kevin Kraft, Director of Community Standards, Tufts University

Following their individual presentations, there will be a panel discussions of the challenges and best practices in this area, with the presenters joined by New England ATAP Chapter Secretary Kevin Kraft, who will share his experience from the field of higher education.
