President's Message

Professionals in our community face increasing challenges to protect the public every day. Acts of terrorism, stalking of public figures and domestic partners, school violence and workplace violence hit the global headlines with regularity. Members of our community strive in one form or fashion to protect potential victims from acts of targeted violence. This objective can only be accomplished through continuous research and education, creating standards and benchmarking along the way to ensure those that protect have access to the best tools possible. This is where we, as the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals (ATAP), hope to give back to the community. Through increasing efforts to identify behaviors indicative of a propensity towards violence and ways to manage possible offenders away from violence we hope to create a safer community.

Over the next few years we look to improve the level of education we afford our members and the external community; improve our relationships with legislators across the U.S. to assist in the development of laws and programs that fund this mission; create a standard certification in violence risk assessment; and further engage our international partners so that global standards and guidelines can be embraced as the challenges of a global workforce continue to develop. We will continue to enhance this website as a tool for members and guests to find the latest research, standards and resources for the assessment and management of violence.

I encourage anyone that is active in the fields of threat assessment and management to join the Association; you can find our requirements for membership on this site. It is only through active and collective participation that we can lead the future of this industry. Contact your local Chapter President for additional details and if you do not have a chapter in your area, contact us so that we can assist in identifying ways you can participate in the Association. As always, come back to this site regularly for details on our upcoming training events such as Chapter events, Spring Regional Conference and our Annual Threat Management Conference.

Respectfully,
Chuck Tobin
